New Delhi, India – WhatsApp is working on a significant upgrade for its in-app camera designed to solve a common problem: taking clear photos in the dark. A new “Night Mode” feature has been discovered in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android (version 2.25.22.2), which promises to enhance your low-light photography without needing a flash.

According to the initial report by the reliable feature tracker WABetaInfo, the new mode is currently available to a limited number of beta testers and is expected to roll out to all users in the coming weeks.

How WhatsApp’s New Night Mode Works

When a user opens the WhatsApp camera in a dimly lit environment, a new moon-shaped icon will appear. Tapping this icon manually activates Night Mode.

Instead of just brightening the image, the feature uses software to intelligently improve the photo by:

  • Adjusting Exposure: Allowing the camera to capture more light and detail from the scene.
  • Reducing Noise: Smoothing out the grainy texture often seen in photos taken in the dark.

This allows users to capture clearer, more detailed images in less-than-ideal lighting conditions. However, the report notes that while the feature offers a significant improvement, it may provide only modest enhancements in extremely dark environments. Importantly, this feature is not automatic; users must tap the icon to enable it.

More Camera and Profile Enhancements Coming

The new Night Mode is part of a broader push by WhatsApp to improve its media capabilities. This follows the recent rollout of real-time visual effects and filters to the camera, a feature previously exclusive to video calls.

In addition to camera upgrades, WhatsApp is also developing tighter integration with other Meta platforms. Another recent report from WABetaInfo revealed that the platform is working on a feature that will allow users to directly import their profile pictures from Instagram and Facebook. This would add another convenient option alongside the current methods of taking a new photo, choosing from the gallery, or using an avatar.
