Another week, another Chinese EV maker positioning itself to shake up the global auto industry. This time, it’s Xiaomi, the Beijing-based tech giant known for its smartphones and, more recently, the popular SU7 electric sedan that made headlines in late 2024 for exceeding sales expectations multiple times over.

Now, Xiaomi is back—this time with a bold entry into the electric SUV segment. Introducing the Xiaomi YU7, a sleek, performance-oriented vehicle that blends design cues reminiscent of the Ferrari Purosangue and Aston Martin DBX707. Priced from just $35,000, the YU7 is poised to undercut Western rivals while delivering top-tier specs.

The base YU7 Standard features a single motor producing 235 kW, accelerating from 0–62 mph in 5.88 seconds, and is built on 800-volt electric architecture—a spec typically found in much more expensive EVs.

The lineup continues with the YU7 Pro, equipped with a dual-motor system for added performance, and is topped by the YU7 Max, which delivers 508 kW of power—exceeding that of the Porsche Macan Turbo Electric—and achieves 0–62 mph in just 3.23 seconds, putting it squarely in supercar territory.

Xiaomi claims CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle) ranges of up to 518 miles for the Standard model and 472 miles for the Max. Thanks to the 800-volt system, charging is equally impressive: 10 to 80 percent in just 12 minutes, or 385 miles of range in 15 minutes, according to company figures.

Here’s how the pricing compares:

  • YU7 Standard: 253,500 yuan (~$35,000)

  • YU7 Pro: 279,900 yuan (~$39,000)

  • YU7 Max: 329,900 yuan (~$46,000)

For context, Tesla’s Model Y currently starts at 263,500 yuan (~$36,500) in China, while the long-promised, lower-cost Tesla “Model 2” has yet to materialize. Earlier this year, Tesla reaffirmed its commitment to launching more affordable models in the first half of 2025—but as of July, production has yet to begin.

With the YU7, Xiaomi is continuing its aggressive expansion into the EV space, offering performance, range, and charging speed that rival or exceed Western competitors—at a significantly lower cost.
